Fox News Brings the Fluff

2010 February 24

File this one under the, “You’ve got to be kidding me!” category.  Fox News has really lost it (again).  You remember how Fox claims that they don’t mix opinion and news.  You also remember how we have seen clear examples of how they mix the two, right?  The guys at Media Matters sure do watch a LOT of news (they monitor Fox as well). I could elaborate but what would be the point?  I have done that SO many times that anyone who still doesn’t know this stuff must spend most of their day with their heads buried in a hole somewhere.

In the following clip, Steve Doocy of Fox and Friends talks so sarcastically about Congressman Xavier Becerra (D) California claiming that he laughed at suggestions that he recite the pledge of allegiance.  No mention on Fox of the obvious:

  1. Such meetings are NEVER started with the Pledge of Allegiance.
  2. Meetings SHOULD never be started with the Pledge of Allegiance, especially when the purpose is to gain political headlines like this one.
  3. Fox initially reported that Congressman Becerra refused to “start” the meeting with the pledge when in reality, the meeting had been underway for over an hour before the beginning of the clip.
  4. Most importantly, no moderator at any meeting should allow some thug in the crowd to hijack the agenda and redirect it down a path of HIS choosing for propaganda purposes.

It is incredibly irresponsible for Fox News to promote the use of our flag and Pledge of Allegiance as political fodder for some nobody, congressional-wannabe.

It is important to notice that Fox’s America’s Newsroom host Bill Hemmer is leading-off a segment with a discussion of this topic, which Fox and Friends has already prepared everyone for and has already told the audience how they should feel about it.  When Congressman Becerra is asked to respond, the viewer is given a slight nudge to consider this appearance as proof that Fox is “fair and balanced” since the accused is given airtime for rebuttal. What is amazing is how it comes off looking like a ridiculous, staged, non-event despite the pains they have taken to blow it out of proportion and bias the audience against the Democrat.

Becerra totally pummels his lame opponent, candidate Ari David, using logic (the Republican Kryptonite).  As a final insult, when asked if Becerra’s answer is sufficient David says no, then goes belligerently off on a tangent to promote his website.  Becerra tries to respond but doesn’t realize that Fox has muted his mic.  Though Fox clearly meant for this to be a train-wreck for Representative Becerra, it seems he shifted into bullet-time and Matrixed his way off the tracks unscathed.  Kudos for him, he must be…THE ONE.

I have to say, as a Californian I’d like to think that we are not so gullible as to fall for fluff like this. What do you think?
